Matchreport 13.09.15: GC 2 - RC Schaffhausen 57-0

A day of rugby was held at the home of Zürich rugby on Sunday, with the junior academy practice in the morning, followed by both senior teams playing at home. The 2nd Team played against Schaffhausen then the 1st Team took on Nyon.

The Zürich 2nd team kicked off in almost perfect rugby conditions just after midday, with the pitch at Allmend Brunau in sunshine and light rain. At the start of the day Schaffhausen were top of the League C, with Zurich sitting in second, so the team knew a win could result in ending the day top of the league.

Zürich fielded a young, energetic team, with a light pack filled with pace against a bigger, more experienced Schaffhausen scrum. However it was not long into the first half that Zürich drew first blood, with Francisco De Posadas diving over the line for the first try, and Jean-Baptiste Flüeler converting.

The first half progressed in similar fashion with the Zürich forwards rucking and mauling hard allowing plenty of ball for the backs to run with. Soon Jean-Baptiste Flüeler got a try for himself and converted pulling the score up to 14-0 in favour of the home team. Zürich continued to push hard in the first half and were rewarded for their hard work with tries coming from Robbie Wishart and Marco Hassan both converted by Jean-Baptiste Flüeler and an unconverted try from Lukas Fopma just before half time, resulting in a solid 33-0 lead at the break.

The second half advanced as the first, with the Zurich team now full of confidence. Shane Peter scored the first try of the half followed by two tries from Dayron Campos, all unconverted, and the final try of the game was scored by Matthias Kaufmann and converted by Arnie Devine.

The final score: GCZ 2nds 57 – 0 Schaffhausen RC

The result leaves Zürich top of League C, with some difficult away trips coming up. By keeping a clean sheet with no points scored against Zürich and having no cards shown to either team resulted in a very satisfying performance to build on going into the season.

Special mention to Phany Sok, Markus Rüegger and Jonas Wendler who all played their debut for the club.
